About this book
Ruth Fielding Down East is subtitled The Hermit of Beach Plum Point, and the title page lists other Ruth Fielding books by Alice B. Emerson. A recap says that Ruth was an orphan in the care of her miserly great-uncle, Jabez Potter the miller, with Aunt Alvirah Boggs, his housekeeper, as the kinder presence. It names her chum Helen Cameron, the school at Briarwood Hall and the titles of earlier volumes.
In one scene rain sprays through the vines of a shelter while Ruth sits on a table with Tom Cameron beside her. In another, someone tells Mr. Hammond they never want to look at a scenario again, and he replies that plays written by actors are full of old theatrical tricks, as he found even before he went into the motion picture business. Bella says her father wrote that he had an engagement here, and Ruth tells her to come and see Mr. Hammond. An illustration is captioned Tom cast aside his sweater and plunged into the tide.
