About this book
Saint John Chrysostom, His Life and Times is presented as a sketch of the Church and the Empire in the fourth century, with a portrait. The account describes young Chrysostom becoming familiar with classical Greek poets and philosophers, while retaining little admiration for their teaching in later life. The account says Chrysostom's retentive memory enabled him to illustrate and embellish arguments with quotations from Homer, Plato and the Tragedians throughout his life.
The account of legal practice says Chrysostom began as a lawyer and that some speeches won great admiration and high commendation from his old master Libanius. The sanctuary episode describes the Archbishop presenting himself to threatening soldiers and asking to be taken to the Emperor so that the whole affair could be submitted to his judgment.
