About this book
Fruit sellers, temple offerings and marble buildings fill the opening view of ancient Ephesus. Through this busy city walks Saronia, an enslaved young woman sent to market by the Roman lady Venusta. Brought from Sidon, she feels confined by the splendour of her mistress's house and looks toward the Temple of Diana as a possible sanctuary. Venusta's daughter Nika resents her, while the Greek Chios speaks in her defence.
Richard Short's historical romance places household jealousy beside religious devotion, art and the longing for freedom. Its descriptive prose lingers over myrtle groves, moonlight and the city's temples. In a later scene, Chios welcomes a hungry travelling minstrel into his studio, hears his account of life in Britain and listens to a song about a British priestess. These scenes give readers a sense of the novel's concern with compassion, remembered love and the influence of faith on private lives.
