About this book

Mrs. Lawrence Turnbull's The Royal Pawn of Venice is subtitled "A Romance of Cyprus." A caption on the front pages names Caterina, Queen of Cyprus, and a painting by Titian. The book is dedicated, by gracious permission, to Margherita of Savoy, first queen of united Italy, and is dated Philadelphia and London, April 1911.

One passage describes a festa in Venice, with crowds along the Riva and in the Piazza and Piazzetta, bells ringing and soldiers keeping an avenue clear for a procession. In another, shouts of "Viva Alfonso" rise in the streets, naming him Prince of Galilee and heir to the crown of Cyprus, and a man named Cornaro draws his sword in anger at the cry. A further passage is a conversation in which the speakers talk of "our Queen-Cousin."
