About this book

A torn school jacket brings Charlie Blore into the shop of Andrew Spurling, a tailor whose real enthusiasm is learning languages. While repairing the jacket, Spurling begins teaching Charlie and his friend Dick Halliday Arabic. Charlie later takes an opportunity to enter the navy, and Dick secures a place aboard the same frigate. Their early lessons give this first-person adventure a practical interest in the value of knowledge.

The story moves from naval life and shipwreck to the Sahara, where the companions face captivity, hunger and uncertain dealings between armed groups. A coastal camp, brackish water and approaching camel riders give the desert scenes their immediate physical detail. Written for younger readers, the novel combines a sea story with tests of endurance and resourcefulness, while its opening makes curiosity and useful skills part of the adventure.
