Seven Legends is by Gottfried Keller. A note on the author says that the little volume appeared in 1872 and had a great success, both with the general public and with the foremost German critics of the day. The note names Eugenia, who flees from worldly success into the rigorous quiet of the cloister, and Vitalis, who in glad self-humiliation accepts the disgrace of evil repute.

The note says that Gottfried Keller, like his friends Storm and Heyse, regarded asceticism as a tendency detrimental to the healthy development of humanity. A woman says she has run away from the convent to see the world but is frightened and does not know which way to turn, and a knight offers to conduct the lady so far on the right way, if she would trust herself to him. A person named David gives a signal, and suddenly the musicians strike up some bars of a dance of such unheard-of bliss and unearthliness that the girl's soul leaps in her body.

Gottfried Keller

Gottfried Keller was a Swiss poet and fiction writer associated with nineteenth-century German-language realism. His linked story cycle Die Leute von Seldwyla portrays an imagined Swiss town through satire, civic argument, failed schemes, work, courtship, and changing fortunes.
