Gottfried Keller was a Swiss poet and fiction writer associated with nineteenth-century German-language realism. His linked story cycle Die Leute von Seldwyla portrays an imagined Swiss town through satire, civic argument, failed schemes, work, courtship, and changing fortunes. The collection appeared in two parts, first in 1856 and then in an expanded second series in 1873 and 1874. Die Leute von Seldwyla, Vol. 1 and Die Leute von Seldwyla, Band 2 preserve different edition labels for those volume divisions. Keller's stories combine close social observation with humor and sympathy for ordinary ambitions. The Banner Of The Upright Seven is an English translation of Das Fähnlein der sieben Aufrechten, a separate Zurich tale centered on friendship, republican commitment, and generational change. Muriel Almon translated the version printed in the Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction. Across these works, Keller turns local Swiss settings into compact studies of character, public ideals, and the gap between self-image and conduct.
