About this book
A racing car breaks the silence of Keno, a desert mining town whose empty buildings recall a vanished gold boom. Its driver, Wiley Holman, stops for a meal at the Huff boarding house and meets Virginia, an old acquaintance who blames his father for her family's losses. Their argument quickly turns from family loyalty to the Paymaster mine, where Wiley takes an interest in a piece of quartz that Virginia considers worthless.
Dane Coolidge sets this Western novel among prospectors, boarding-house residents and people trying to recover money tied up in mining shares. As Keno comes back to life, Wiley weighs leases and stock options while a Christmas gift offers a chance to soften Virginia's anger. The appeal lies in that close connection between personal feeling and business: a promising mineral specimen, a disputed investment or an offer of friendship can change the terms of an old quarrel.
