About this book
Owning an airplane brings Johnny Jewel a new set of worries on the Western ranching frontier. Engaged to Mary V Selmer, he insists on repaying her father for horses stolen while he was absorbed in his machine. Mary V offers a way back to ranch work, but Johnny sees the money as a test of his honesty and independence. His rejection by Army aviation adds another obstacle to the life he wants to build.
B. M. Bower mixes a Western romance with the practical frustrations of early flying. Johnny and Bland argue over landing places, meals and clothes, while Johnny weighs repair costs and lodging. The lively exchanges give the novel its humor, while Johnny's stubborn pride keeps the stakes personal. Readers interested in the meeting of ranch culture and aviation will find a story driven by work, affection and self-respect.
