About this book
Shakespeare and the Emblem Writers includes a group of portraits from original plates, one of Bocchius by Bonasone, A.D. 1555, and others by Theodore de Bry, A.D. 1597. The text says that Shakespeare refers to a fable of the vine clinging to the withered elm in the Comedy of Errors, when Adriana addresses Antipholus of Syracuse with the words Thou art an elm, my husband, I a vine.
The text quotes emblem verses in which the vyne doth still embrace the elme by age ore-past, and Loue is not kil’d by death, that after death doth last. The text mentions a matchless shield by Vehm on which are hammered out the discoveries of Newton, Milton’s noble epics, and Shakespeare’s dramatic wonders. The text quotes lines which say that the work must be read with skill, heed, and judgment, or it stands in small stead to the reader, from Ovid’s Metamorphoses translated out of Latin in English metre by Arthur Golding, gent.
