About this book
The book presents a critical study of Shakespeare, with a contents entry describing the task of biography as difficult but not impossible. The discussion of drama credits Kit Marlowe with establishing unrhymed iambic pentameter on the public stage as the medium of English drama. The study says English blank verse was used in a translation and had been employed in an old play and in other plays performed at court.
The account of Shakespeare's verse says that he does not seem at first to have appreciated Marlowe's reform or fully understood the rejection of rhyme. The comparison of verse forms notes nearly twice as many rhymed as unrhymed verses in Love's Labour's Lost.
