About this book
Joseph Quincy Adams writes a history of the playhouses of Shakespeare's day, built largely from quotations and footnotes. One part deals with London's inns, where actors performed and where the city authorities found plays more trouble than anything else. The text quotes the Common Council on disorder, drink and riots, and a letter from the Recorder to Lord Burghley, and it notes the plague as another worry in hot summers.
Another part takes up the Globe. Adams cites Ben Jonson's Every Man Out of His Humour, presented at or soon after the Globe's opening in 1599, where a character is called a "well-timbered fellow" and the house is called "this fair-fitted Globe." He argues that the building was most probably polygonal outside and circular within, while noting that E. K. Chambers thinks it may have been square. The book also has an index, whose entries include the Red Bull Company and York House.
