About this book
Ben Jonson's Every Man in His Humor is presented in its Anglicized Edition, with an introduction, the five acts and a glossary. The introduction calls Jonson the greatest English dramatist except Shakespeare and explains his comedy of humours, in which a ruling trait or passion defines each character. It describes Downright as a plain squire, Bobadill as a braggart who is also a coward, and Brainworm as a man bent on fooling everybody.
In one sampled scene Bobadill swears by Pharaoh's foot, Master Stephen admires the oath and tries to copy it, and Mat. praises the tobacco. The glossary explains old words, among them pursuivant, purl and pump.
