About this book

Sir Mortimer is presented as a novel by Mary Johnston. Sir John Nevil sits at a table with maps and charts while Mortimer Ferne leans over his commander's shoulder and watches a finger tracing the coastline. Henry Sedley, a lieutenant described as a young gentleman of great promise, plays a sweet and plaintive air softly on a gittern taken from the wall.

Ferne tells Captain Robert Baldry that his gossips lied, warns that repeating lies without examining a quarrel may lead to being called a liar, and flings his glove. Arden supports a sinking figure and guides it to a seat, while someone holds wine to the lips before Sir Mortimer opens his eyes.
