About this book

René Descartes examines the grounds of certainty through six connected meditations on knowledge, God, and the distinction between mind and body. William Molyneux's English translation presents the arguments alongside objections by Thomas Hobbes and Descartes's answers. In his preface, Molyneux explains why he has favoured precision over polished phrasing: each stage of the reasoning depends on what came before.

The discussion of error links mistaken judgments to a will that reaches beyond clear understanding. Descartes then turns to material things, considering length, breadth, thickness, motion, and the idea of a triangle before asking about existence outside the mind. These passages make the book useful for readers interested in how a philosophical argument proceeds through definitions and distinctions. Its older spelling and deliberate pace reward close reading, while the objections and replies give competing claims a place beside the main argument.

About the author

René Descartes

René Descartes (1596-1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist often called the father of modern philosophy. He invented analytic geometry, argued for radical doubt as the path to certainty, and coined the phrase 'I think, therefore I am,' reshaping Western thought.
