About this book

Rain, flooded rivers and wagons buried in mud give this military account much of its texture. Writing as the brigade's adjutant general, George B. Hodge follows Kentucky troops who entered Confederate service despite their state's divided loyalties. His opening traces their organization near the Kentucky line, their occupation of Bowling Green and the scouting raids of John Morgan.

Hodge writes with open admiration for the brigade and its commanders, presenting events from a committed Confederate perspective. Alongside that loyalty come concrete details of moving an army: a narrow railway embankment becomes a crossing above floodwater, while artillery and baggage travel on platform cars. Readers interested in Civil War regimental history can examine how a staff officer links individual reputations, transport problems and the hardships of retreat in a commemorative account published in 1874.
