About this book

Recruiting men in San Francisco was only the beginning of George H. Pettis's Civil War service in the Southwest. This personal military narrative follows Company K of the First Infantry, California Volunteers, from its formation into the demanding movements of the California Column. Pettis describes a region divided by loyalties, the organization of volunteer troops, and the practical obstacles of moving men and supplies from California toward the Rio Grande.

Water determines the pace of much of the account. Desert crossings, exhausted soldiers, scattered detachments and difficult river transport give the history its concrete texture. Towns, camps, distances and named officers help readers trace the route through Arizona and New Mexico. Readers interested in the western reach of the Civil War will find an officer's recollections of recruitment, marching and military decisions, told from an openly Union perspective.
