About this book
Socialism: A Summary and Interpretation of Socialist Principles is by John Spargo. This is the new and revised edition of 1913. The front matter notes it was published in June 1906 and reprinted several times, and the book is dedicated to Robert Hunter.
In one passage Spargo sets Herbert Spencer's gloom about the future beside the last words of Saint-Simon, "The future is ours!", and says that millions in many lands have joined the movement and that its study matters to every citizen. Another passage quotes President Roosevelt on the class spirit and speaks of immense fortunes on one hand and terrible poverty on the other. A further passage takes up the widow's savings: the author says no Socialist plans to socialize non-productive wealth, and goes on to the petty business, the individual store, the small workshop and the farm operated by its owner.
