About this book
The Common Sense of Socialism is a series of letters addressed to Jonathan Edwards, of Pittsburg, by John Spargo. The little book is inscribed to George H. Strobell as a token of friendship and love. A line credited to Charles H. Vail calls socialism industrial democracy that would put an end to the irresponsible control of economic interests.
The letters say that, even at its best and brightest, the lot of the workingman in the present social system is not an enviable one. The book quotes Frederic Harrison, described as a well-known conservative English publicist, saying that ninety per cent of the actual producers of wealth have no home that they can call their own beyond the end of a week.
