About this book
Some Salient Points in the Science of the Earth is by John William Dawson. The title page says the book comes with forty-six illustrations. The preface says the work is intended as a closing deliverance on some of the more important questions of geology, on the part of a veteran worker. The contents list gives, among others, the chapters The Starting-point and World-making.
The text says the term gneiss is sometimes of wide and even loose application. A note says it appears that about a hundred species of Carboniferous reptiles have been recognised on the continent of Europe, in Great Britain, and in the United States. The text calls the earliest of two races locally, though on the whole they were contemporaneous, the Cannstadt or Neanderthal people, characterised by a low forehead, with beetling brows, massive limb bones and moderate stature.
