About this book
The preface to Spanish colonial literature in South America argues that official documents are important foundations for a nation's history but cannot tell the whole story. The discussion of La Argentina calls the work a contemporary chronicle and judges its writer's choice of verse rather than prose a serious mistake in communicating experience and observations. Centenera's dedication says that verse might allow a governor burdened with affairs of government to read the work more easily than the long histories usually received.
The bibliographical entries include translated travels through Peru and the first and second parts of a chronicle of that country. The discussion of Lovera attributes his acceptance of many reported miracles to simple credulity toward tales from imposters or people of exaggerated faith.
