About this book
A History of Italian Literature includes a chapter headed Dante’s Life and Minor Writings. The text says Dante’s predecessors can be regarded as his forerunners only in so far as they had helped to create an intellectual atmosphere congenial to the special bent of his genius. The text says the Vita Nuova is believed to have been written about 1294.
The text quotes a sonnet that speaks of Beatrice and says of it that here is the germ of the Paradiso, at all events. Dante is quoted as resolving to say no more concerning his Blessed One until he could treat of her more worthily, and as hoping to say concerning her what has never been said concerning any woman. The text says the subject of the Crusades is too vast to be embraced in a single poem, and that the capture of Jerusalem, though the most fit of all its incidents for poetical treatment, is not of itself sufficiently extensive for an epic poem.
