About this book
Irish hills, ruined abbeys and changing coastal weather provide the settings for Clinton Scollard's poems in Sprays of Shamrock. The opening verses announce an interest in Ireland's landscapes and dreams, while the poems that follow mingle local legend with remembered places. A vision prompts MacCarthy More to seek a sacred site in "Muckross"; Maeve's stone cairn becomes a focus for thoughts about beauty, fame and passing time.
Other voices speak from exile, confinement or the anticipation of meeting a loved one. In "Rain Song," a lad from Donegal leaves the peat fire to meet Sheilah despite the wet weather. Repeated phrases and strong rhythms give many pieces the sound of songs, while named lakes, mountains and villages keep the verse rooted in particular ground. The collection suits readers drawn to short landscape poems in which affection for a place carries memories of faith, longing and loss.
