About this book
Changing seasons give Henry van Dyke's Poetry many of its scenes and rhythms. Winter appears as an old graybeard giving way to a tender Spring, while autumn trees become regiments whose fallen leaves prompt grief. Tulips in Union Square draw the speaker's thoughts toward a quiet woodland stream and its birds. Elsewhere, flowers greeting the sun become an image of prayer, and a wooded glen becomes a place of worship.
The collection also returns to parting, forgiveness, and the desire for home. A dove seeking its nest teaches a wandering speaker where to find rest; a traveler finds a sense of home with a beloved. In other poems, familiar beauty persists through separation, and remembered sounds return like echoes across a bay. Sun and rain, music and silence, happiness and grief balance one another, giving these poems room for both gratitude and loss.
