Sprees and Splashes of Droll Recollections of Town and Country

Henry Morford

Sprees and Splashes of Droll Recollections of Town and Country is a humorous travel and reminiscence volume by Henry Morford (1823-1881), the American journalist, editor, and novelist who edited Morford’s Magazine and wrote a long series of Civil War novels including The Days of Shoddy, Shoulder-Straps, and The Coward. After the war Morford turned to travel writing and to humorous sketches of American manners. The Sprees and Splashes volume gathers comic recollections of theatre nights, country outings, militia balls, and city promenades from the New York and Hudson Valley of the 1850s and 1860s. The book is a primary source for the popular humour and urban culture of the mid-nineteenth-century American Northeast. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
