About this book
State of the Union Addresses, credited to Martin Van Buren, gathers addresses dated from December 5, 1837 to December 5, 1840. One address says the country, under continued favor, has gradually risen from a few feeble and dependent colonies to a prosperous and powerful confederacy. One address transmits copies of the treaties concluded with the Governments of Siam and Muscat, and says that commerce with the islands of Cuba and Porto Rico still labors under heavy restrictions.
An address says that the claims of citizens upon Peru, Chili, Brazil and the Argentine Republic, among others, are still pending, although many of them have been presented for examination more than twenty years. Another address grants that embarrassments in the pecuniary concerns of individuals, of unexampled extent and duration, have recently existed in this as in other commercial nations.
