About this book

State of the Union Addresses, credited to Thomas Jefferson, gathers addresses dated from December 8, 1801 to November 8, 1808. One address, to the Senate and House of Representatives, says that the wars and troubles which have for so many years afflicted our sister nations have at length come to an end. Another address says there is reasonable ground of confidence that all the internal taxes, among them excise, stamps, auctions, licenses, carriages and refined sugars, may now be safely dispensed with.

An address reports that the coasts have been infested and the harbors watched by private armed vessels, some of them without commissions and some with illegal commissions. One address says that one of the two great divisions of the Cherokee Nation has under consideration a request for the citizenship of the United States.
