About this book
The Writings of Thomas Jefferson is a library edition containing his autobiography, Notes on Virginia, a parliamentary manual, official papers, messages and addresses, and other writings, official and private. The contents list Letters Written While in Europe, 1784-1790, among them letters to General Washington and to James Madison. The contents also credit a piece titled Jefferson as a Tactician to Hon. George W. Atkinson, ex-Governor of West Virginia. The text includes the statement that Thomas Jefferson was a great man, a great diplomatist, a great tactician and an illustrious citizen and patriot.
One letter says that were England and France in a condition to go to war, there is no question but they would have been at it before now. A letter states sales at two-thirds of a dollar the acre and says they may be said to have absorbed seven millions of dollars of the domestic federal debt.
