About this book
R. A. Fletcher's Steam-ships carries the subtitle The Story of Their Development to the Present Day. It was published in London in 1910 with a hundred and fifty illustrations, and one illustration is captioned the William Fawcett, a steamship of 209 tons built in 1829.
The text gives figures for particular vessels. The Earl of Hardwicke, of 1600 tons, had a 30 horse-power engine driving paddle-wheels that could be disengaged in one minute so that she could use sails alone. Her sister ship Vernon ran from Calcutta to Spithead in 86 days. Other pages cover ferry-boats, among them the Drottning Victoria and the ferries of the Tyne, Glasgow and the Mersey, and the steamers of the Holyhead and Dublin North Wall service, two of which were converted to twin-screw.
