About this book
Warships and Their Story includes a chapter on iron ships of war, from the introduction of iron armour to broadside and turret ships. The account of naval leadership says that Great Britain and France shared that position when the Crimean War broke out, with their fleets containing the finest specimens. The account describes an armour arrangement which leaves the ship's ends unprotected and adds the weight saved to the armour covering the central portions of the vessel.
The torpedo described is a smooth steel cylinder whose projecting spike strikes the target and ignites an explosive positioned just behind it in the head. The discussion of torpedo propulsion describes compressed air as the motive power and says an apparatus for heating the air has increased the efficacy of compressed cold air.
