About this book
Stone circles, worked surfaces and buried tools give Frank Stevens the materials for explaining Stonehenge. Writing as curator of the Salisbury Museum, he introduces the monument through a guide for visitors, then examines its setting on Salisbury Plain, the different kinds of stone and the arrangement of circles and horseshoes. Plans and illustrations by Heywood Sumner accompany this account of the site.
The discussion moves from what a visitor can see to the labour involved in shaping, transporting and raising the stones. Stevens uses excavation finds, including flint hammers and fragments of deer horn, to support his reconstruction of the building process. He also considers dating, the summer solstice, the Druid question and nearby burial mounds. Readers interested in archaeological writing can follow how this 1916 guide builds its arguments from physical remains and presents the interpretations of its period.
