About this book
Sir Norman Lockyer, director of the Solar Physics Observatory, looks at Stonehenge and other British stone monuments from the point of view of astronomy. The front matter lists his other works, among them The Dawn of Astronomy and The Sun's Place in Nature.
One passage explains how the elevation of the pole and the tilt of the equator change with latitude, comparing Thebes with Stonehenge, where the axis of the globe is inclined 51 degrees to the horizon. Another passage deals with the May festival, Holy Thursday, Ascension Day and Whit Sunday, and notes evidence that pagan fires at other times of the year were also gradually replaced by candles in the churches. A further passage gives equations for finding the north polar distance of the sun, with a worked example.
