About this book

Fire, ice, and a hungry giant begin Emilie K. Baker’s retelling of northern legends. The opening describes how the gods shape the earth, set the sun and moon in motion, and build Asgard above the human world of Midgard. A rainbow bridge links their home to the earth below. The collection then follows Odin’s search for wisdom, Thor’s encounters with giants, and stories of magical weapons, dangerous creatures, and disputed treasure.

Baker tells these legends as prose stories with named gods, dwarfs, and heroes. In the middle excerpt, Loki borrows Queen Ran’s enchanted net to catch a salmon that changes into the dwarf Andvari, whose hidden wealth he demands. The contents also introduce Siegmund, Siegfried, and Brunhilde.
