About this book

Fire and ice meet in the opening creation account of H. A. Guerber's handbook of Germanic and Norse mythology. From the deep gulf between two elemental worlds emerge the giant Ymir, the nourishing cow Audhumla and the first gods. The narrative introduces Odin and his brothers through their conflict with the frost giants, placing divine figures within a landscape shaped by cold, darkness, heat and light.

Later chapters turn to individual gods, giants, dwarfs and elves, with sections on the Sigurd saga and a comparison of Greek and Northern myths. The Rhine legends offer a different scale of wonder: Lorelei sings above the river, advises a fisherman and uses magic against an armed party. Prose accounts alternate with quoted verse, making the volume useful for readers who want to connect familiar mythological names with their stories and literary treatments.
