About this book

Dink Stover arrives at Yale trailing a golden reputation from prep school, certain that football glory and social standing are his for the taking. What he finds instead is a campus quietly ruled by secret societies, where every friendship and ambition is weighed against the tap on the shoulder that admits a chosen few. Owen Johnson follows Stover as he wrestles with the cost of conformity and slowly learns to think for himself. Serialized in 1911, the novel captured undergraduate life at the turn of the century so sharply that F. Scott Fitzgerald treated it as a textbook for his generation. It remains a keen study of ambition, loyalty, and the pressures of belonging.
