About this book

A Spoil of Office, subtitled A Story of the Modern West, is by Hamlin Garland, and its preface says the author's intention was to treat life as it would present itself to a young Western man of humble condition who sets himself to the task of winning a political success. The preface adds that the author kept with considerable care the point of view of Bradley Talcott.

A girl at a meeting says she cares more for the poetry there is in having Flora, and Ceres, and Pomona brought into the farmer's home. The girl says she sees the farmers coming together in groups, with time to read and time to visit with their fellows. Bradley sits by the fire alone in a great hotel, aware that he is there as a legislator for a great State. The legislator says inwardly that he will be true to his trust, and means to be so dignified and serious that he would not seem young to the other legislators.

Hamlin Garland

A boyhood on farms in Wisconsin, Iowa and Dakota Territory gave Hamlin Garland the material he worked for fifty years. Born in 1860 near West Salem, Wisconsin, he left for Boston in 1884, read Henry George in the public library, and turned single-tax anger into fiction that refused to make prairie farming look picturesque.
