About this book
Stray Leaves, or Traces of Travel, is by Alexander MacDonald. The contents list names, among others, The Diary of a Pilgrim, with places such as London and Paris, Geneva, Berne, Interlaken, Milan and Venice, and Jottings of a Trip in Scotland.
The text describes a larger bird that the sailors take to be a howl, as one of them expresses it, and that proves on closer and more careful scrutiny to be a hawk. The text says that as the ship nears the coast of Newfoundland the birds leave and fly landward. The text says a song has been done into English, or rather into mixed English and broad Scotch, but it has lost somewhat in the rendering. The text says the passage from New York to Gibraltar took twelve days and that the Saxonia is slow, but sure and steady.
