About this book

Carriage travel out of Paris gives Charles Dickens plenty to notice: busy wine shops, crowded streets and postilions struggling into enormous boots. His 1846 account begins with plans for a year in Genoa. From that base, the contents trace visits to Italian cities including Bologna, Verona, Milan and Rome, with a crossing into Switzerland along the way.

Dickens explains that many of these impressions began as private letters written at the places he describes. That immediate viewpoint gives everyday activity as much attention as celebrated sights. The mountain passage follows a difficult night climb through the Gorge of Gondo, then a change to sledges amid snow, wind and steep drops. For readers interested in the novelist as a traveller, these pages bring together comic observation, personal reactions and close descriptions of changing landscapes.
