About this book
Stray Thoughts for Girls is a book by Lucy Helen Muriel Soulsby. The book is dedicated to girls at the awkward age. The preface says that the awkward age is most frequently found between the ages of thirteen and twenty-seven, but that some girls never go through it.
The text advises taking as a motto that rules should be iron when they clash with our own wishes, and wax when they clash with those of others. A passage speaks of the love of her country and the sense of public duty, which shine out in Jephthah's daughter. The text says that, however commonplace a girl may be, she will represent Woman to the man who is in love with her, as surely as Beatrice represented it to Dante.
