About this book
A Book of Strife in the Form of The Diary of an Old Soul, by George MacDonald, was published in 1880 and is arranged under the months January to December. The dedication asks Sweet friends to receive the offering and to let their white page be ground and the print be seed, growing to golden ears that faith and hope shall feed.
One verse says, Thy will be done, I yield up everything; another says, Thou art my life, my health, my bank, my barn. A further verse says, Not thine, my Lord, the darkness all is mine, and calls on Love primal, the live coal of every night, to flame out and scare the ill things with radiant fright. Another verse says, There will be jubilation in a world, and speaks of the glad lark, soaring heavenward from the sod.
