About this book
Studies in Civics is by James T. McCleary, late teacher of civics and history in the State Normal School, Mankato, Minnesota, and is revised to 1897. The preface says the thought constantly in mind in preparing the book has been to furnish useful material in usable form. The preface also says the Constitution of the United States, not a mere abstract of it but a careful study of the text, is properly given much space but is not allowed a monopoly of it.
The text compares the ways boys settle their disputes with modes of adjudication among men, saying Trial by Battle was introduced into England by the Normans and calling another way settlement by Arbitration. The text says an overt act is an open act, not one that is simply meditated or talked about, but one actually performed. The text says the Supreme Court has decided that there must be an actual levying of war and that plotting to overthrow the government is not treason.
