About this book
A Library Primer by John Cotton Dana sets out suggestions for public library policy and procedures for handling books. The preface says that the original draft has been revised, rewritten, and extended for publication in book form at the request of interested people. The discussion of education presents the public library as providing opportunities and means for the education that individuals give themselves.
The policy recommendations call for few unobtrusive regulations, open shelves, and public admission to the collection. The librarian and assistants are instructed to treat people of different ages, knowledge, and manners with uniform good temper and without condescension. The procedures for gifts require acknowledgement, entry in a gift book, and small gift-book plates pasted inside the front cover.
