About this book
J. J. Butler's Successful Stock Speculation was written in April 1922 and published that December. Its contents are grouped into parts, with chapters titled What Is Speculation, Some Terms Explained, What Stocks to Buy, What Stocks Not to Buy, When to Buy Stocks, When to Sell Stocks and Movements in Stock Prices. A note at the front says the book is not copyrighted.
One passage separates investing, buying for a fixed income, from speculating, selling for a quick profit rather than holding. It adds that the author once used the phrase stock speculating with safety and was criticised for it by a financial magazine. A chapter titled Short Selling defines it as selling a stock you do not possess with the intention of buying it later. Another passage works through a table of share prices, including Anaconda and Erie Common, for ten shares of each bought on February 14th with margins of 30 and 50 per cent.
