About this book
How to Invest Money is by George Garr Henry, vice-president of the Guaranty Trust Company of New York, and the title page is dated 1908. The preface says the book aims to set out the simple principles of investment and give a working knowledge of the classes of securities available.
The preface adds that the book grew out of the writer's experience as an investment banker. The contents list nine chapters: general principles of investment, railroad mortgage bonds, railroad equipment bonds, real-estate mortgages, industrial bonds, public-utility bonds, municipal bonds, stocks, and market movements of securities. One passage separates promises to pay, such as bonds and mortgages, from equities, such as capital stocks. It names two cardinal principles, distribution of risk and choosing securities to match real requirements. Another passage on industrial bonds looks at the value of the real estate behind them.
