About this book
The book is headed as a supplement to an address presented by Lt.-Colonel William Wood before the Second Annual Meeting of the Commission of Conservation in January, 1911. The opening text says the appeal prefixed to the original Address in 1911 announced the present supplement in 1912 and asked experts and other leaders of public opinion for advice and criticism.
Under LAWS, the text says that, to be effective, wild-life protection laws must be scientific, comprehensive, accepted by the public, understood by all concerned, and impartially enforced. The text says one general code would suffice, and that a preamble could explain that the object was to use the interest, not abuse the capital of wild life. The text speaks of an American 'student' who had taken 369 clutches of eggs of each of the seven or more species of waterfowl there breeding, and says the population of the Rocks is rapidly decreasing. A passage says there are moose, woodland caribou and the red deer, besides nearly all the fur-bearing animals found on the Labrador, and that there is no game protection whatever.
