About this book

Joseph Maclise's Surgical Anatomy is an illustrated medical text that refers throughout to numbered plates; the transcriber notes that the printing, particularly the multicolor images, is in remarkably good condition. It describes the structures a surgeon meets in particular regions of the body and how they lie in relation to one another.

One section takes the bend of the elbow, where a vein is opened for bleeding, and explains with Plate 15 how the artery lies beneath the fascia from the biceps tendon, with the cephalic and basilic veins near it, and why care is needed when opening the vein over the artery. Another discusses injury to the spinal cord and its effect on the diaphragm, the abdominal muscles and the pelvic organs. A third compares the coverings of the subclavian and carotid arteries in the neck, naming the muscles that lie over each.
