About this book
A Manual of Clinical Diagnosis aims, according to its preface, to state the more important laboratory methods with clinical value and offer a brief guide to interpreting results. The preface traces the book’s origin to a short set of notes that the author dictated to his classes some years before. The discussion of sputum classifies specimens by consistency and says that, as a rule, greater mucus content and less pus and serum mean greater tenacity.
The section on microscopic examination recommends careful selection of the portions most likely to contain structures of interest, observing that a few preliminary minutes sometimes save hours of work. The description of the author’s modified circle method gives directions for counting leukocytes in microscope fields with specified dilutions.
