About this book

A delayed dinner guest leaves Hubert Granice alone with the failure of his writing ambitions. In the opening story, he paces a comfortably furnished library while waiting for the lawyer Peter Ascham, then returns to a letter rejecting his latest play. Edith Wharton sets the signs of a prosperous household beside a man's private distress, making ordinary objects, manners and conversation carry the tension.

Published in 1910, this collection of ten short stories also turns a sharp eye on intellectual fashion. In another passage, Bernald listens as Alice Fosdick explains the need to revive enthusiasm for Pellerin's teachings among his devoted followers. Her eager explanations and the gathering around a lecturer expose the social habits behind lofty claims. Readers interested in ambition, wounded pride and fashionable convictions can follow how Wharton draws character through small gestures and the pressure of talk.
