About this book
Ten Boys from Dickens is by Kate Dickinson Sweetser. The preface says that the volume presents as complete stories the boy-lives portrayed in the works of Charles Dickens, and that the boys are followed only to the threshold of manhood. The preface names boys such as Poor Jo, who was always being moved on, and David Copperfield.
Oliver asks for some more, and the master, a fat, healthy man, turns very pale. Mr. Sowerberry, the parish undertaker, applies for the prize and carries Oliver away with him, and his constant companion is an older boy, Noah Claypole. A first-person narrator says Doctor Strong refers to him publicly as a promising young scholar, and says that for these reasons he resolves to fight the butcher.
