About this book
The contents list names, among others, The Wrong Way (1889), The First Zionist Congress (1897) and The Jewish State and the Jewish Problem (1897). The text says the other eight essays all deal with one aspect or another of Zionism, and form a series that will let the English reader follow the history of the Zionist movement. The text says that of the ten further essays included in the present selection only two belong to the former category, and these are placed, out of their chronological order, at the end.
An essay headed Summa Summarum (1912) calls itself a summary not of facts and figures, but of impressions stored in the writer's mind in the course of sixty days. A passage about the Colonies says the administrators have done all that they could to remedy their earlier mistakes and have extended the Colonies wherever it was possible to buy land in the neighbourhood. The same passage says that if one visits one of these Colonies to-day, one hears quite another tune, and the first thing they tell one is "We are independent."
